Plate Removal and Risk Factors Contributing to Plate-Related Complications Following Rigid Fixation in Maxillofacial Surgery: A Retrospective Study
Summary of the necessity of project implementation
The use of titanium plates is common in most jaw and face surgeries. These plates are used in reconstruction of maxillofacial defects, internal fixation after trauma and fixation during orthognathic surgeries. Complications related to plates include infection, wound opening, exposure of the plate, loosening and breaking of the screws, palpability of the plate, and breaking of the plate, which requires re-surgery to remove the plate. Plate removal surgery imposes a repeat surgery on the patient and causes problems for the patient in terms of aesthetics, performance and cost. By knowing the common factors that cause this problem, you can prevent the occurrence of problems after surgery. Considering the inadequacy of information about the cause and epidemiology of plate removal and complications related to the plate in reconstructions and the lack of investigation in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and the importance of this investigation, the purpose of this study is to investigate the patients in Shariati Hospital and Sina have undergone plate removal surgery, the cause of plate removal and factors related to it. The results of this study can be used to reduce the possibility of needing re-surgery to remove the plate.
